The truth about machine learning “learning types”

Hi there! How are you doing? It is Machine Learning killing your mental peace?

As I promised you in today’s post I’m going to show you useful content about different types of learning in machine learning.

Moreover, this comic also wants to describe the ambient of women in machine learning and data science, which helps each other since sometimes there is no other choice. A big hug to all of them!

Learning Types (the uncomfortable truth)

They always made you believe that Machine Learning and Data Science are tough fields, but actually real life is tougher. And, …, since most of these algorithms are based on basic simplifications of human actions, here we go with a comparison of learning types in ML and DS with how we learn in real life.

I like to compare Supervised Learning with learning from experiences. For example, when you live and you want to do something crazy a lot of people will tell you it’s a bad idea and you did it anyway. These people telling you is a bad idea is your label, and if you did it anyway and you failed it, well, …, they told you… There are different kinds of labels, they can be numbers, like the number of time your bf cheated to you, categories, like types of stones you already fell with. My only recommendation is to get a good learning source like your mother’s advice and not that DisMay fairy tales that tell you everything will be fine!

Unsupervised learning is like learning on the go when you have no idea about what the heck is happening in your life and you try to imitate what others do or patterns you find in society (aka influencers). Urban groups, heavies, hipsters, and you are half and half. I guess there is no fu**ing unsupervised algorithm capable to find any pattern in my chaos! But I like to compare the unsupervised learning behavior with what teenagers do with their life.

Reinforcement learning is like when you are training your crush to please you. Oh, you cleaned all the dishes! Let’s celebrate it here now the countertop is clean (after two years). Oh God, next week I’ll clean the countertops, the sink, the shower and even that ugly drawer in the entrance… In real life, rewards use to be, money, sex, or beers, but in Machine Learning it can be anything.
